Awesome Times Documented

Our youngest daughter graduated Summa Cum Laude
with a degree in Physics in December 2022.  She is presently a
research scientist with a company working on the Lunar Human Landing System.

There were some great times in more than 4 decades of teaching.  My wife and I also had fun raising a family of six children at the same time!  There is no higher honor than parenting.
It was also an honor and great fun serving my students in the classroom as a teacher or as coach/mentor.  I encouraged many of my students to take part in a variety of science competitions over the years and had many successes.
Serving 2 different schools as a science chair was an opportunity to work with amazing peers. Peers who enriched and challenged our students to accomplish in science.
I worked with many talented colleagues in a variety of workshops as a leader over the years that enriched my experience as a professional.
So here I organize and document some accomplishments at the state level or higher using past records.  This project helped me remember how much fun it was!
Since retiring from the classroom some have sought me to continue mentoring, coaching and tutoring online.  That now adds some new experiences as well.
I am adding as time permits even as our clan of grandchildren grow!

In the decade (above) at a new school I focused on a "Faith, Science and Reason" initiative, a "Physics First" science sequence change, on coaching a physics team, guiding science fair competitors and encouraging competitive science pursuits in our department.
===========================================
In the previous decade (below) at a private independent school goals were to foster a more successful Advanced Placement Science program, implement "Computational Sciences" that created computer coded projects related to the physics and chemistry, coaching a Physics Team, coaching a Chess Team and guiding science fair competitors.

I worked in the Mobile County Schools System for 10 years on paper but actually I spent one year observing and evaluating teachers as a contract employee for the University of South Alabama and another three years working for the Science in Motion Program. Six years were spent at SS Murphy High School.

Physics Team Victory in 2018

I appreciate all of the students who responded to my challenge and prodding
with so many wonderful memories!

McGill-Toolen Catholic Physics Teams Shine Bright at Recent Tournament

McGill-Toolen sent 12 students comprising three teams (A, B, & C) to the University of Alabama High School Physics Competition in Tuscaloosa on Friday, February 16.

McGill-Toolen swept the private school division, with Team A placing 1st, Team B placing 2nd, and Team C placing 3rd. Among all divisions, Team A placed 1st, Team B placed 2nd (Teams A & B actually tied in regulation but Team A won the tiebreaker), and Team C placed 4th overall (just behind Auburn high school).

Finally, McGill-Toolen won 1st place among all schools in attendance. Marvin Collins placed 7th in the individual competition, and Patrick Spafford placed 8th.

Dr. Burgess worked with the team until November of 2018.  Congratulations to Mr. O'Keefe who took over the team and congratulations to all members of the McT Physics team! It's great to be a Yellow Jacket!

Team Rosters are below:

Team A
Peter McDonald (12)
Findlay Maier (11)
Marvin Collins (12)
Patrick Spafford (12)

Team B

Combining my love for competition and interest in science was something I did from early on in my career.
I also liked to do “action research” to evaluate initiatives in my class and department.

“Physics First” was a department wide change in science sequence that I wanted to implement if able to.

Physics Photo and Essay Contest Winner 2017!

I appreciate all of the students who responded to my challenge and prodding
with so many wonderful memories!

Each year the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) publishes a calendar with student photo contest entries that are selected from many hundreds of entries from around the world each year (I know that they have exceeded a thousand entries in some past years).  A school is limited to 15 photo/essay entries each year.
McGill-Toolen Catholic High School student Bayleigh Wilson's was a winner in 2017!  The 2018 AAPT Calendar features a photo submitted by McGill-Toolen Catholic High School Physics student Bayleigh Wilson (2020) TWICE.  I was delighted to see that her picture was selected to be on the cover of the calendar.  I was even more delighted to see that BOTH her essay and picture are featured for the month of March 2018 as well!  The insightful, coherent and physically accurate essay (an important part of the contest is the essay) is prominently placed with the photo on the calendar.
The calendar is sent to everyone who receives "The Physics Teacher" journal (over 37,000 worldwide) and it prominently displays "McGill-Toolen Catholic High School" (Mobile, Alabama) and Bayleigh Wilson's insightful physically accurate essay (an important part of the contest is the essay).
This is not "just a science" competition.  This particular competition requires an artistic flair, fluency in writing the essay and an awareness of how awesome and beautiful creation is.  So intellectual, emotive and spiritual artistry were all involved!  Such a selection means Bayleigh Wilson has multiple talents and skills obtained in more than just a science class.

     Another stellar  student accomplishment!
